Remind Chat Privacy Policy

1. Overview

ParentSquare, Inc. (“ParentSquare,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) knows that privacy is a top priority for you. We are committed to protecting your privacy.

This Remind Chat Privacy Policy (this “Privacy Policy”) covers how we collect, use, and share information collected through the Remind Chat service and mobile application (collectively, “Remind Chat”).

Note: This Privacy Policy does not apply to our Subscription Services, including ParentSquare Engage, ParentSquare Attendance Plus, Remind Hub, Smart Sites, and StudentSquare (our “Subscription Services”), to our public websites, or to outside companies that ParentSquare does not own or control. Unlike our Subscription Services, which are provided to schools and districts, Remind Chat is provided directly to students, parents, teachers, and other users who sign up for an account and download the application.

2. Information We Collect 

ParentSquare collects personal data provided by you directly in connection with Remind Chat.

Data Categories Collected in the Last 12 Months 

The following information may be collected through Remind Chat:

Identifiers Name, email, phone number, IP address, and unique online identifiers.
Protected Characteristics Class membership.
Commercial Info Records of Remind Chat features used.
Network Activity Interactions with Remind Chat, including messaging.
Geolocation General location data (not precise tracking).
Audiovisual Photos and videos provided by you.
Education Info Teachers, group memberships, and extracurricular activities.
Sensitive Info Log-in credentials when you create a Remind Chat account and the content of messages sent.
Inferences & Other Conclusions drawn from the data above and other information linked to the personal information above.

3. Where We Get This Information 

ParentSquare gathers data from three main sources:

A. From Schools and Districts 

Your school or district may provide information to register you for a Remind Chat account.

  • Examples: Name, ID number, title, phone number, email address, group memberships, extracurricular activities, enrolled courses, classes, section, grade level, preferred communication language, emergency contact information, family relationships, school memberships, and district memberships.

B. Directly from You 

We collect information that you provide through Remind Chat. These may include:

  • Specifics: Names, phone numbers, email addresses, date of birth, school and/or district, class, group, club, team or organization affiliation, and attachments that may contain your voice and image. 
  • User Profile: You may choose to add additional information, such as your profession, talent, interests, and abilities.

C. Automatic Collection 

Whenever you use Remind Chat, we automatically store certain data: 

  • Online Activity: Pages you visit and actions you take, like comments posted. 
  • Notifications: We track email delivery, text delivery, app downloads, and click engagement to improve your experience. 
  • Device Info: Your browser type, mobile device type, operating system, IP address, and unique device ID. 
  • Cookies: We use cookies to personalize your experience. You can block them in your browser, but it might break some features. 
  • Location: General location information (city level) to secure Remind Chat.

4. How We Use Your Information 

We use your data for lawful business purposes, including: 

  • Operations: Creating accounts, providing customer support, providing requested products or services, and analyzing and improving Remind Chat. 
  • Communication: Responding to inquiries, sending push notifications, and sending updates or marketing materials where permitted by law. 
  • Security & Legal: Protecting the security of Remind Chat, troubleshooting, complying with laws or legal requirements, or following your specific consent.

Note: We do not build student profiles for advertising or use student records for targeted ads.

5. Sharing Your Information 

We do not sell your personal data or share your personal data for targeted advertising.

We only disclose information to: 

  • Service Providers: Third party subprocessors who help us run Remind Chat by providing customer support, analyzing use, sending emails/texts/push notifications, and hosting the application. We may also share deidentified or aggregated data with them. 
  • Affiliates: To help maintain our services. 
  • Legal Compliance: In response to subpoenas, law enforcement investigations, court orders, to enforce our Remind Chat Terms of Use, or to protect the safety of our users. 
  • Business Changes: In the event of an actual or potential merger, sale, acquisition, or bankruptcy.

Those privacy policies, not this Privacy Policy, apply to the third-party subprocessors’ use of your personal data, but those third-party subprocessors must adhere to privacy obligations in a manner consistent with and at least as protective of your personal data as is set forth in this Privacy Policy.

6. Visibility & Links Third-Party Websites 

ParentSquare and other users may post links to external websites. Before interacting with those sites, please familiarize yourself with their distinct privacy policies, as we cannot control their data practices.

7. Children’s Privacy (COPPA) 

ParentSquare follows COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act). 

  • Consent: We may employ FTC-approved methods to request permission from a parent or guardian for data collection and use. 
  • Usage & Visibility: Users, including children, can make certain posts publicly available. Other than these public features, a child’s data is only disclosed to our service providers. 
  • Retention: We retain data as long as the child’s account is active. If an account is inactive for 12 months, we may delete the data (except as needed for legal obligations or dispute resolution). 
  • Rights: Parents can request to review, correct, and delete a child’s data, or refuse further collection, by emailing privacy@parentsquare.com (authentication may be required).

8. Your Choices & Controls

How to Opt Out of Communications

  • Emails: Click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of promotional emails, though you will still receive administrative or transactional messages. 
  • Texts: Reply STOP to any SMS message to stop receiving texts from that class, group, or school. 

Managing Data

You may review, update, correct, and delete your information by logging into your Remind Chat account.

9. State Privacy Rights

Residents in states including CA, CO, CT, DE, IN, IA, KY, MD, MN, MT, NE, NH, NJ, OR, RI, TN, TX, UT, and VA have certain privacy rights regarding their data. Depending on your state, you may have the right to:

  • Confirm whether we process your data and access a copy of the specific pieces collected.
  • Know the categories of data collected, used, and disclosed, the sources, and the business purposes.
  • Obtain a list of or the categories of third parties to whom data was disclosed.
  • Correct inaccuracies in your personal data.
  • Delete personal data we have collected about you.
  • Not be retaliated against for exercising these privacy rights.

Authorized Agents: You may designate to submit requests on your behalf by designating such an agent in writing or through a power of attorney. We may require the agent to provide us with proof that you have authorized the agent to make requests on your behalf prior to accepting requests from the agent.

10. Changes to Privacy Policy 

ParentSquare may change, modify, add, or remove portions of this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will revise the date and post the updated version on our website and in our application.
